Memories of Emily’s stubbornness returned to Jessa. Evidently, time had done little to dampen the woman’s willfulness. Though Jessa couldn’t detect an abundance of negative energy radiating from Emily, an inability to respect rules and boundaries pointed to an imbalance of a person’s negative and positive energies. “Emily, let’s start with you.”

Emily squinted at the sky. “The crystals have been baking in the sun all day. They won’t burn our skin, right?”

“No, no, no.” Jessa shook her head. At least she hoped they wouldn’t. The obsidian pool could be finicky. The last time she’d used the first chakra pool was in late March, when the crystals had been as cold as the frost still clinging to the early spring ground, even in the mid-afternoon sun.

“Emily, the masseuse determined that your first and fourth chakra are blocked. We’ll start you off in the fourth chakra pool. This chakra rules matters of the heart.” Jessa walked along the gentle curve of the half-moon of pools, her feet sinking into the mossy turf as she passed the pools for the seventh through fifth chakras, in hues of purple and blue. She knelt down at the fourth chakra pool, a bed of tumbled rose quartz, and held her hand over the stones. With the sun low in the afternoon sky, the crystals still radiated a comfortable warmth, no stronger than a soothing heating pad.

Emily stood back from the pool. A series of emotions flickered across her face. If Jessa had to guess, she would say the first was shock, then pain, before finally settling on anger, judging by the hard line of Emily’s clenched jaw.

“Are you okay, Emily?”

Emily hesitantly shook her head as if in a daze and then snapped back to attention. “I was just thinking about how my heart chakra became blocked. So … what do I do?” She strode across the moss and stopped at the edge of the pool.

“Lie down, face and palms pointing to the sky, and relax. You can clear your mind or let it wander. It’s entirely up to you. Even if you don’t believe in the power of the pools to unblock your heart chakra, at the very least it will clear the remaining gooseflesh from your skin.”

Emily glanced down at her arm and brushed a hand over her skin, as if trying to erase the small bumps. Then she sighed heavily and stepped onto the pool. “A bit toasty,” she murmured, lowering herself onto her back and stretching out her arms and legs wide, like a starfish.

“Palms up to receive abundance from the universe,” Jessa said softly. “I’m just going to place a few stones on your body to aid in clearing the blockage.”

Emily snorted and her eyes rolled under the thin skin of her eyelids. “Are my hands antenna?”

“Hands were designed to hold both the tangible and intangible,” said Jessa. She placed a rose quartz crystal in Emily’s right hand and then walked through the spongy moss to the other side of the pool, where she placed another crystal in Emily’s left.
